I took my birthday off

My birthday being yesterday, I stayed home from my day job, wrote not one god damn word. Played video games, ate pizza, and watched movies. All in all not a bad way to spend my birthday while my sweetie-wife tooled around town between her job and various appointments.

About 9:30 she called me from her job to let me know there was a little ‘some thing’ in the closet for me. She directed me to an open Amazon shipping box in the walk-in closet and told me I’d find a little thing in there. (She had already gotten me a NOOK for my birthday. A  NOOK I am thoroughly enjoying.)

So what was the little ‘thing?’ a blu-ray copy of John Carpenter’s The Thing. I spent the morning watching it and listening to the audio commentary by Carpenter and star Kurt Russell. A good film and a good commentary track.

In the evening I went to the Mysterious Galaxy Writers’ Group meeting, where we hashed out a few ideas for group structure and future plans.

Once I got home I had a bowl of ice cream and watched most of a documentary on exploitation films made in thePhilippines, I’ll finish that up tonight.

Quite appropriate for my birthday it looks like my recent spat of headache may be a symptom that I need a new eyeglass prescription. I have an exam set-up for next week.

Quick thoughts

ON the movie Pirates! Band of Misfits. This was fun, it’s from Aardman studios so it is claymation and can best be thought of as Incompetent Pirate Captain vs lonely Charles Darwin vs Steampunk Queen Victoria.

Then saw Marvel’s The Avengers again, works perfectly well on a second viewing.

How a minor thing bugged me for over ten years.

I have a mind that once it latches onto a puzzle or mystery it doesn’t let go, ever, quitting only when an answer is presented. That doesn’t mean that every second of every day will be spent gnawing the problem, but that problem will resurface in my mind, like debris after a shipwreck, fouling my thought chains at random and often inopportune times.

Here’s an excellent example. Continue reading

A Geeky Annoyance

Here let me get something of my chest; I HATE the term xenomorph as the proper name for the creature featured in the Alien franchise.

Now I fully sympathize with people in that using the word ‘alien’ as a proper name is clumsy to the point of stupidity. Science-fictions, and SF movies are overrun with aliens of ever strip and creed from the Mu-Tants of This Island Earth to Mr. Spock of Star Trek and countless others, so trying call one particular breed of alien, The Alien, make for grammatical suicide. Movie Review: Wrath of the Titans

Sunday afternoon, after a pleasant trip to the zoo, my sweetie-wife and I went to the movies to catch Wrath of The Titans, a sequel the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans. Clash of the Titans was a fun popcorn romp, with lots of nice fantasy elements strung along a fairly thin father/son plot. I enjoyed it enough to buy the blu-ray when it was released.

Wrath of the Titans is not as good and if you thought that Clash of the Titans suffered from a think plot, brace yourself for the lack of plot that is Wrath of The Titans. Continue reading
