I Really Like This Photo
This past Sunday there was no weekly trip to the Zoo because my sweetie-wife and I went to see 28 Years Later and there was no zoo expedition the previous Sunday because that was my weekend of migraine headaches. That’s not a recommended weekend, by the way.
However, we did go to the zoo on June 19th. My sweetie-wife has that federally recognized holiday off and I took the day off to share it with her.
The bird in this photo is a Western Bluebird and it is not an animal on exhibit at the San Diego Zoo but a wild creature that came into the enclosure with California Condors and the Common Raven. I really like the way the photo turned out. The subject is really nicely isolated from the background both by color and by the depth of field. None of the other picture I snapped that day are even close in how much I like them.
This Week’s Zoo Photographs
This Sunday was our customary trip to the San Diego Zoo and I am continuing to gain familiarity with my new camera. (It’s a used DSLR but new to me.) I came away with three photos that I particularly like.
This Polar Bear.
This Bee Eater. (I Like the composition of this one)
And this pudgy little Weaver
Zoo Photos of the Week
Yesterday, Sunday April 13th, my sweetie-wife and I as is more often than not, visited the San Diego Zoo and it was the second weekend with my replacement camera.
I have to say I think this camera, a used Nikon D750 in excellent condition, performs much better with its white balance under overcast conditions than my previous unit. I had gotten sued to leaving my older camera at home when it was overcast because I disliked how the photo came out but yesterday, I was quite pleased with the results. Here are two pics I took on Sunday’s excursion. Both are birds. One caught in flight, just barely within the frame, but I love how by sheer luck I got a nice capture of its wings and second of a another bird of the same species at the instant it’s taking off from a branch, wings pulled back high for the downstroke, body stretched with its leap into the air, but the bird hasn’t yet released its grip on said branch.

A Trip to the Zoo
Over the weekend a new lens I ordered arrive and I had a chance to try it out on the weekly Zoo trip.
I seem to have about the usual ratio of photos taken to photos work showing, that is to say 1 photograph in ten was somewhat decent.
In the new children’s section, (there was one before, but this was a massive redesign) we found an enclosure with a pair of Western Burrowing Owls.
Here’s one the Zoo’s gorillas, looking very much like the old man of the mountains.
Here’s a small monkey that appears very contemplative.
And though the quality if the last photo is lacking I’m happy to have the pic of a Fishing Cat. We’ve been going to the Zoo for years and this animal is very shy, rarely visible in his enclosure. Often the best you get is a bit of the tail or a leg exposed from its’ hiding spot. Sunday however we caught the cutie walking around. Sadly he settled on a ledge that had terrible lighting and I had to push the ISO to 1600 and artificially open up the exposure to get anything decent at all.

Running Late Here’s a couple of Zoo Photos
Boxing Day at the San Diego Zoo
First off let me say I should be back to fairly regular postings here. I have reached the ‘burn out’ stage of overtime and while there is another week or three to be offered by my employer, I am happy enough to just work regular hours.
December 26th, Boxing Day to most of the commonwealth nations but just ‘the day after Christmas’ here in the United States my sweetie-wife and I enjoyed a pleasant morning at the Zoo. (Mostly pleasant, I did develop a head and we cut it a little short.) Of course, I took photos and three of the 25 seemed worth sharing.
This is an Ibis of some species but as it was there holding down the enclosure where an eagle normally resides there was no plaque to tell us precisely which variety of ibis it is.
I really like this photo of the ibis because it has a real ‘Raptors in the grass’ feel about it.
An elephant made the cut this week. I just like the framing of the photo but for no particular reason.
