SciFi thought of the Day

I’m having a really bad arthritis knees day so I will leave you with this one thought.

How Many people live on Coruscant? Wikipedia lists the fiction planet as having a population of 1 trillion.

From the films we can see it is a densely populated world and we are told that the entire planet is one big city. (In George Lucas’ mind all planets have one dominate feature, Desert, Ice, Forrest or City.)

So let’s assume a population density matching that of Manhattan. (That’s a low ball figure considering the height of the buildings but it gives us something to work with.)

And a surface land-area equal to the earth’s.

Manhattan Density : 27,485 per km square.

Earth Land Surface area: 148,940,ooo km square.

27,485 X 148,940,000 =4.0936159^12 people. or 40,936,159,00,000 almost 41 trillion people.

Seems to me the wikipedia entry is a bit of a low ball figure based on the fantastic nature of the planet,

Here’s an interesting thing to run, given that population density how big of an area would the Earth’s current population take up?

Current population: 6,812,000,000 / 27,485 = 247, 844 square kilometers.

That’s smaller than the state of Nevada at 286,367 square kilometers. Every man woman and child on planet earth fits into Nevada if we all live like New Yorkers. That really gives SF colony designers something to think about.

Catch up

There is no Sunday Night Movie this weekend as I was at Condor and too tired after the convention for movie watching. I wish I could do Condor justice in a review but the combination of a really busy and good con plus a series of headaches that has been pretty consistent since last Weds has just ruined my ability for decent blogging.

However I can say this. This was the best Condor I have been too. There were plenty of interesting panels, I rarely felt that I lacked anything to do. I had a number of really good conversations and re-connected with a number of friends I only see at conventions. I also came away with the idea I needed to make chapter three of Cawdor work. So despite the pain it was a pretty good weekend.

Today I managed to write over 1500 words on Cawdor. 750 at work on my laptop and the rest at home after my sweetie-wife went to bed. If I can keep up that pace I will have the first draft finished by the end of June early July.

Delayed First Post

We got off to a good start not too early nor too late in the morning. A quick stop to buy supplies, dies sodas for me and water for her then a sandwich for my breakfast and we were on the road.
The drive went fairly well for most of the trip. Los Angeles had stop and go traffic, but it would be surprising if that city didn;t slow down our average speed. We stopped near Magic Mountain for our lunch and then over the mountains and down into the central valley.
The Central valley is the sit of California’s great agricultural production. That means mile after mile of farm and ranch. It makes for fast highways and dull scenery. The most exciting part of the scenery were the frequent sighting of signs that read, “Congress Created Dust Bowl.” I’m sure they need to add a word or two to that sentence. Perhaps making it “Congress created THIS Dust Bowl.” It’s all part of recent water wars in the Central Valley.
We arrived at the hotel in good spirits and despite being told otherwise by a gopher we were able to pickup our badges from registration.
We had dinner at a little Philly Cheesesteak place, but that turned out to be a mistake for me. Oh I had them hold the dreaded and dangerous mushrooms from my sandwich, but the sandwich itself seemed to be constructed from concrete. For hours now it has sat there resisting all attempts to be digested like a politician resisting a straight question.
Tomorrow the convention starts in ernest. I hope he doesn’t mind.

Down and safe

10 geek points for the reference in the title.
We have arrived at Baycon 2009. TThere is not free internet in the hotel rooms and I refuse to pay $40 for 4 days of internet access. However there is an internet lounge and it does have free Wifi. Therefore I will make occasional posts from here.
